Sustainable Designer Fashion in California

Fashion 2025-07-23

Sustainability is important to us. But in the world of fashion, it isn’t always easy—especially for an indie designer brand like ours.

Sourcing sustainable materials, finding local manufacturers, and keeping things budget-friendly—not just for us, but for you, our customer—can feel like an uphill battle. But we do it anyway, because we love the oceans, the Earth, and the natural world. So much of our inspiration comes from nature. The shimmer of water, the shape of a leaf, the softness of sand. To honor what inspires us, we know we have to take care of it.

We’re not perfect yet. But here are a few ways we’re already making thoughtful choices to protect the planet

We use every bit of fabric After cutting garments, we save the leftover fabric and use it to make our handmade scrunchies. It’s a small detail, but one that reduces waste and adds beauty.

Our packaging is plastic-free We ship your orders in eco-friendly bags made from renewable materials that can be recycled. They’re also made right here in the USA, which reduces our carbon footprint. Thank you to EcoEnclose for making our sustainable packaging.

We even considered our desiccants The little packets that protect your clothing in transit? Ours are biodegradable.

We manufacture locally All of our clothing is cut and sewn in Los Angeles. This helps us reduce emissions and supports skilled local seamstresses.

We Produce Small Batch To avoid over-production, we never make more clothing than we know we can sell. Every Sun & Sanctuary garment goes to a loving home.

We use natural fabrics Our pieces are made with natural or primarily natural fiber fabrics. We avoid polyester as much as we can, choosing breathable, biodegradable materials that are better for your body and the planet. Our linen collection is a favorite for sustainability.

We use salvaged fabric when we can Some of our garments are made with leftover or overstock fabric that would otherwise go to waste. We give it new life and turn it into something beautiful. The Whitecliff Dress, which our founder originally designed for her engagement photos, is one example of this.

Looking Ahead We’re excited to keep improving. In the future, we hope to offer:

  • A thrifting or resale program for gently worn Sun & Sanctuary pieces
  • Local beach cleanups
  • Collaborations with environmental nonprofits

We believe fashion can be beautiful, intentional, and kind to the Earth. Thank you for supporting a brand that’s doing its best to tread lightly and dream big.
